Sweet Baby Rae

Riley,

When you have questions about how you were as a baby, I want to be able to express to you just how precious you really are and how much we absolutely adore you. Here are some things that you do that convey to us a little of your personality. (after your first month)

First and foremost, you like to eat. You eat like it is going out of style. When I am feeding you, you are very good at stopping when you need to burp. You burp on the way to my shoulder, so by the time you are at my shoulder, you feel very done and accomplished and waste no time in diving down for some more milk. When you eat from a bottle, the voracious nature of your appetite is even more pronounced. You gasp and choke as you drink like a maniac, and when we try to pull the bottle out of our mouth so you can catch up, we have to brace ourselves for the onslaught of protests. It is very cute...in a ferocious sort of way.

Your big blue eyes melt my heart every. time. You are super cute when you sleep, and I love when you are completely limp as you contently sleep on my chest. But when those intelligent eyes of yours are open and active, I am in awe of how much you seem to take in and comprehend. Even from the first minutes you were on this Earth, your alert and attentive eyes have been a trademark of yours. You have been able to focus on things from very early on. You especially love the Grandma Hanks' quilt that hangs on the wall (you could stare at it and be content for hours!). Even in the first week when those eyes would predictably pop open at 8pm and we knew we were in for a long night, we couldn't be frustrated because we love those moments we get to interact with you. You are a very smart, observant girl.

A pasttime you and your Dad enjoy is bouncing on the exercise ball. I think your Dad found this method more from desperation than anything else, but it has become a regular routine that when Dad has you, you get to bounce. And you love it! As he bounces you, you crane your head back to look at the quilt, the window, whatever catches your interest, and you stare at it as he bounces you for hours on end. Exercise balls have a lot of uses, but I think our favorite right now is daddy-daughter bonding time.

You tend to smile quite a bit. I know that many of those smiles are not 'real'-they are more reflex than actual expressed happiness-but it seems like your face has a tendency towards smiling. We have been working on getting a genuine smile with Pat-a-Cake and playing with you, but right now you don't seem to get it :) Meaning we get more of a quizzical stare than any expression of delight. We are excited for when we get to see that happy face of yours expressing true excitement and happiness.

We love you Riley! And we are excited for getting to know more of your personality as time goes on. We are very blessed to have such a wonderful girl as part of our family!
